Kailomas In Fiji

Kailomas in Fiji

The first Part-Europeans were descendants of the first European white settlers and iTaukei women and established themselves mostly in Levuka, Vanua Levu, or other outlying islands. Over the years these descendants intermarried and established kinship ties, so generations are now linked through marriage or bloodlines.

Part-Europeans came to be known by some using the Taukei word Kai Loma, which means ‘in between’. Another term is Vasu, but this is not available for common use as it is bestowed directly from and through one’s iTaukei maternal line. It is not known where the word kailoma stems from, and it is now used to refer to people who were born in Fiji from mixed races, such as, iTaukei/European, iTaukei/Indian, and others. So in Fiji a kailoma is no longer a person descendant just from a European.

For more detailed information on Kailomas, please read Sandra Thaggard’s account of Fiji and the History of Part-Europeans.

Also see: Fragmented Identities: The Journey of a Kailoma  >> Dulcie Stewart provides a list of resources available for anyone who is researching their family history in Fiji.

The Fiji. Land of our Fathers website is dedicated to recording the lives of descendants of European settlers. The editor would welcome entries from families listed here to add to our growing list of men and women who have made significant contributions to the shaping of modern Fiji.

A LIST OF KAILOMA FAMILIES IN FIJI WITH THEIR COUNTRY OF ORIGIN AND WHERE THEY SETTLED IN FIJI.

In cooperation with the Facebook group, Kailomas In Fiji, Neil Billings has provided a list of Kailoma Families in Fiji with their country of origin and where they settled in Fiji. The list is being continually updated.

We have a list of families so its time to make this list more meaningful and informative. Two pieces of information will be added, one the country of origin of the family name and the second the place of connection in Fiji to the name. Please contribute, we also have family researchers on the Facebook page (Kailomas In Fiji) if assistance is required. For example Neil has listed two family names (Billings, Taylor) that he is associated with to get things rolling. This will be interesting information for all, this has never been done collectively. The list will be updated and a revision date stated.

Revision date: 2/2/16 (Fiji), 1/2/16 (USA).

For inquiries about families on this List of Kailoma Families in Fiji, please email Neil Billings.

Both my grandparents are Kailomas and would like them to be listed if possible. Laurence Mostyn Lonngren Sydney Levuka Sigatoka Suva (he married the daughter of Adolph Pfeiffer listed) then William Thompson U.K. Sydney, Suva, Savusavu, Suva (he married a Beddoes). I find the site very interesting. Do have proof of the above, if needed. My siblings and myself were also born in Fiji. Thanking you. Cheers Pamela

        Hello Elise

My grandmother was Nancy Wetherall from Savusavu.

She married John Crosby Giblin (Jack), son of John Beaumont GIBLIN (Launceston-Tasmania-Australia, Dreketi – Macuata)

I too would like to know where the Weatherall’s came from.

My email is maryann.p@optusnet.com.au and would appreciate if you hear a response to let me know also as I find it hard to keep track of these sites.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Hi there. My ancestor Stephen Smith, who was English, had two sons with either a Tongan or a Fijian Woman around the 1870s… Rambi Island is where Stephen drowned in a crossing of the strait. His sons were in the Navuloa Institute…..Christine Smith

We, as kailomas most definitely have a fun and exciting heritage. My skin is white, but as we know we come in different shades. To be called a “kumala vula” or “white cockroach” was ok by me. I know that the sailors or settlers who ventured out in the wide Pacific in the 1800’s were a breed apart. For them to hook up with a Fijiam marama at a time when cannibalism was practiced is quite ballsy to say the least. My mom a Hickes is grand daughter to Edward Hickes who in the 1870’s, in Namosi married into the Matanitobua clan. Ratu Matanitobua was one of the Chiefs who ceded Fiji to Great Britain. His name is on the plaque in front of the government building in Suva. My moms mom was a Pickering and the original Pickering who turned up in Fiji in the 1840’s, well he’s written up in R A Derrick’s, “History of Fiji”.
He was quite a guy that Robert Pickering Jr. was. But that’s another talanoa.

That’s awesome. I had your father’s name as David first, but I’ve corrected that in the family tree. Just recently found your father’s cousin Florence Archer’s grave in Sigatoka. Also visited the Burness’ family home. Have you got family tree started?

    Bula.
My late mum, Elizabeth Randolph was a distant descendant from the Earl of Moray, Scotland.
She resided in Vatudamu near Salt Lake, Savusavu in the early 1940s. She later married a Muslim originally from Suva.
However, being a staunch Catholic she refused to convert to Islam and decided against moving with him to Suva. I remained with her until her untimely death, although I was too little to remember.
My Dad came to know about my dear mum’s death and then took me away from my mum’s place to live with his new family in Suva.
I am told by my relos in Savusavu, Rotuma and Rabi that am closely related to the Whippys and Mckenzies of Kasavu (Buca Bay) and also to the Lanyons in Savusavu.
I have come to know I few of them, but very grateful if relatives out there could reach out to me please.
Lets be a family once again 🙂

Bula Shane, I’m fascinated by your post. I am a direct descent of the Whippys of Kasavu and my mother Emmaline Sarah Goulding (nee Wilder) grew up on Rabi Island when it was owned by the Lever Brothers. Her Grandfather was an Englishman, William Henry Wilder – the manager of the Rabi copra estate and his son (my Grandfather) Martin Wilder was also a manager there in the 1920’s. HIs wife, Mariah Whippy (my Grandmother) was from Kasavu – most of her sisters married Simpsons. I have heard the name Lanyon so many times. On May 17, 2016, Mum turned 94 and her memory is very poor these days sadly, but she remains a very beautiful and graceful lady and in her good days was a treasure trove of family history. I’m completely fascinated by it all.

The Bucknell family still has vast sheep stations in North Queensland, but since Mr Bucknell ran off to Fiji with the children’s Governess, they have not forgiven him and have even expressed no interest whatsoever in a reconciliation with the Fiji branch.

I am the present owner of the Patterson home at the top of Nigau Hill, Levuka, Ovalau. Out of sheer curiosity and the fact that old family photos were left behind in the home, I have been researching Dora (Emma) Patterson’s forbears, the Pattersons and the Simpsons and further back, David Whippy. Edgar Patterson, Dora’s 92 year-old son, will be coming with eleven descendants this September to revisit his home town of Levuka. We have had many long email conversations, I visited him in New Zealand and he is very keen about his family history. I recently also met in Queensland by sheer chance a descendant of Stella Simpson (Dora’s older sister) in Maleny, Queensland.

If you have any information you could add to this growing story, please let me know.

The book may be launched later this year at the Fiji Museum. It will be full of information about this esteemed man his family in Nantucket & the achievements & challenges he faced in very difficult times in early Fiji. It will be very interesting for many people & well worth purchasing.

We are the descendants of William Berwick who is originally of African American descent and married to the 6th Vunivalu of Bau – Ratu Seru Cakobau after he was brought over by the Premier from Melbourne to build the large ships for the royal fleet. He was the son of a slave and his father won his freedom enabling William to travel on the traders ships into Australasia.

I am the grandson of Rev. Dr. Samuel Berwick PhD. (Litt.) and Adi Tokasa Lewamoqe, granddaughter of Ratu Timoci Tavanavanua (2nd Son Of Ratu Cakobau).
We live in Wellington, Auckland – NZ and also have family in Lautoka, Nadi and Suva – Fiji.

That piece of land was given by Ratu Cakobau for Berwick descendants-all becoz of William Berwick. You’re right, he build ships/boats for Ratu Cakobau. The foundation of Ratu Cakobau’s house is still there-remember when I was a kid – ‘It’s a no-go zone’. A descendant of the Berwick family is there right now. My maternal grandmother is Sereima Dikoli and her other siblings are Ratu Ravuama Vunivalu, Nau Di Bera Kurusiga and Nau Divokili Pareti…..thanks….

The Patterson family/Levuka – Dora and Reg Patterson – Dora being a Whippy descendant.

Although I am not a kailoma I have been the owner of Dora Patterson’s family home in Levuka for several years now and find the family hisotry fascinating. Although I have contact with Edgar Patterson, Dora’s son, who, at age 92, still lives in New Zealand, I would like to find other people who can tell me more about the family and the house itself. Given Levuka now has World Heritage Listing, I would like to be able to compile a story about the original owners and their home, their contribution to the town and Fiji to pass on to visiting tourists and other family members.

Hi Rowena, Emma Dora Patterson was a Chapman from Savusavu. D. Patterson’s father was William Henry Chapman, and he owned a plantation on Savusavu. There is quiet a bit of information about D. Patterson’s relatives
And, no doubt you’re aware of D & R’s Patterson’s connection to the Patterson’s of Ovalau – that is, Patterson Brothers Shipping Pty Limited. The Pattersons still manage the company after its first sail in 1928.

Hello! Both my parents are kailomas and I would love to have them listed as well if possible. My paternal greatgrandfather is an Underwood from kadavu he married my great grandmother who is from Wallis and Futuna. They had four kids the oldest being my grandfather William Underwood who later married my grandma Unaisi who is from Yasawa. They have four kids and my dad William Underwood (jnr) is the second eldest.

My maternal grandfather is Larry Goodwin originally from the USA with French and American Indian blood. He first came to Fiji in 1973 as a peace corps and taught at the Govt Printing and later at the Fiji school of Printing which I believe is now part of FNU. He married my grandmother Maria Dulunaqio who is from Natokalau Kubulau Bua and they had their first and only child (my mum) Christine Elizabeth Goodwin in the year 1975. I believe my mum and grandfather are the only Goodwin’s in Fiji so I think it would be nice to have them listed as well if possible.

The Morel (Morrell) (Morrel) clan originated from two brothers, Horace and Raymond, who grew up in Marylebone, London. Sons of Edward Morel (Normandy) pastrychef, and Elisa Weatherall, dairymaid. Horace arrived in Fiji mid 1800’s and Raymond a few years later. The boys were graduates of a catholic college in the Midlands of the UK, and were not full Jesuits but trained as missionaries.

Horace’s progeny are kailoma by virtue of Horace’s wife Scylli, a native of Vanuatu, and are the majority of the Morels in Fiji to this day.

Raymond took his family of four to him and wife Meta Scheauch, a Berliner Jewess, and two oldest daughters to Meta of uncertain fatherhood, (possibly his brother Horace as Meta’s first husband) to New Zealand in 1910.

Originally settling in Navua, the two boys had reasonably extensive dairy operations in the Rewa delta, and operated a steam launch, the Pioneer, as part of their trading business.

        Hello, Fiona,

Sorry for the late reply, I just found your message now. Yes Charles Nisa Knowles was half Tongan and married a Tongan who was the great granddaughter of Queen Pomare of Tahiti and Nobelman Inoke Fotu of Tonga, they had a daughter Vailolomoli Knowles. Charles later went to Fiji and married Caroline Knowles Sigatoka. Charles had a brother William Knowles and their father was James Knowles. He was apparently the son of Cpt. Josiah Nickerson Knowles. But that part is still unsubstantiated as Josiah was a whaling captain from Nantucket who was married already.

        Hope that helps…

The Rogers family original European ancestor was a Spainiard by the name of Rodrigues. The family anglicised the name to Rogers during colonial rule to give them better access to employment with the government and British companies.

The Rogers originally intermarried with the Tuilevu family from Kadavu.

I have just discovered this site while tracking down the original William Simpson ‘from Popular England’–my wife Sarah is a kailoma and a direct descendant of his–if you have any info about him eg exact date of birth or place of birth or parents etc would be helpful.

The real reason for this note is that you mention Rodriguez/Rogers in your post on 5/10/2015 and my family history involves the same names and changes. Coincidence? Who knows. So I would like to track back and see if I have rellies in the Fiji History. What can you tell me about them and their family back in London?

Do you have James Campbell, a Scot who left New Zealand after the death of his wife. Took his children, Mona Campbell, and Leslie James Campbell with him.

“1905: Went to live in Fiji. His plantation comprising 213 acres is situated near the town of Suva., on the large island of Viti Levu. Mr Campbell intends cultivating maize and peanuts, and raising cattle and goats. Married a Fijian woman.” Remained there until after the beginning of WW2 when he moved to Sydney Australia.

My maternal great grand-father was Henry Weber BAILEY – born 1876 Vagadace, Levuka on Ovalau – two older brothers – his father Richard BAILEY from Sussex – Dairyman of Levuka – wife Annie Maria née WEBER – from New South Wales (?). My mother’s mother Frances Annie née BAILEY was born in 1902 in Sydney to Susannah Evangeline née GEARSIDE (died 1905) and Henry Weber BAILEY (died in Sydney – tram accident – in 1910). My grand-mother told me of a memory of her grand-mother BAILEY visiting her in Sydney – I presume it was pre-Great War.

I visited Fiji in January 1972. All I knew then (I was 22) was that my great grand-father was Henry BAILEY – born in Fiji. In the mid-1980s I sought his birth certificate – that told me he was born at Vagadace in (near) Levuka. I have been able to find nothing more. Recently a niece Jemima Rose née MERRITT (of the same BAILEY descent line) via a half-sister married a young chap from Fiji – all I know is his name – Paula NASOVASOVA – and that his parents are Methodist ministers (?). My niece and Paula have a child – Stella-Rosi – who according to this site is thereby “Kailoma”! Lucky her!

If anyone has any information on the BAILEY “Kailoma” story – relatives/links – I’d be most grateful.

William Henry Bruce, my paternal great, great grandfather, was a shipwright from Portland, Maine, USA. He hailed from the Bruce clan in Scotland, some of whom fled to Nova Scotia after the Highland Uprising. Having built his ocean-going boat, he circumnavigated the Globe and arrived in Levuka, the old capital of Fiji, in the 1800s. He met and married Sarah Watt a teacher and Scottish migrant from Melbourne and they decided to make Fiji their home. They had four children: two girls and two boys who were all named after American warships from World War One: Essie Atlanta, Mona Cora, Washington and Douglas. Douglas barely survived his mother who died in childbirth. I recently visited their graves in Levuka

Some eight years later when William Henry (fill in history) died this left the three young children orphaned and they were taken into care by the Catholic Mission. Donald Henry was adopted by the French Marist Priests who baptized him ‘Donald Henri (spelt the French way) de Bruce’.

Having inherited vast acres of land around Levuka and mainland Ra, which overlooks the Yasawa Group, Donald Henri decided to set up a copra plantation on Nanuya Lailai. As a shipwright’s son he inherited his carpentry skills and built boats for other traders in the Yasawas, using eager-to-learn Fijians who soon took to the craft like ducks to water. One particular apprentice,Tokoni went on to build the ‘Matanitu’, one of the largest, sturdiest sail boats owned by a Fijian at that time. Tokoni came from neighbouring Matacawalevu, a large island with the longest beach apart from those on the mainland. The Catholic Mission of Vuaki was well established there and provided schools which served most of the islands in the group.

Grandpa Don also ran a general store where one could purchase almost anything one could possibly need for island living and if he lacked any particular item, he would pick it up from Lautoka on his next trip ashore. Perhaps it was because he had Scottish blood that Grandpa Don wasted nothing; he even bred pigs on the hillside. Such an enterprising entrepreneur had no trouble in persuading the local chief to give him the hand of his daughter, Marica. They settled down on this idyllic island, being completely self-sufficient and provided employment for the Yasawa people.

Before long, seven children, half Scottish-American and half-Fijian generated a melange of skin shades.

    The Barley pedigree:

My mother, Andie Rose Barley, was born to Nakesa Luisa who was also from a chiefly clan of Waya Levu, in the Yasawa Group. Andie’s father, John Charles Barley, an Oxford Don, hailed from Dorset in England. He was commissioned by the Colonial Office as District Officer of The Western Division in Fiji which also took him to various outposts in the South Pacific.

Only a decade ago a well respected local photo journalist told me that it was John Charles Barley, my maternal grandfather, who had introduced the Taralala or Tra la la. This was a rather sedate type of barn dance which he thought would discourage any sexual frivolities instigated by the sensual island style rhythmic movements. How wrong he was!

Barley also sired a son in Fiji, another one in the Solomon Islands and one in New Zealand; they were all given his name ‘Jack’, a derivation of John. Many years later when these now adult siblings discovered each other, the way they could differentiate between the sons was to call each of them after the country in which they were born: Fiji Jack, Solomon Jack and Kiwi Jack. Here was a batch of half-English and half-Fijian Kai Loma.

My interest is in Adi Maraia Macpherson’s mother. If our families overlap perhaps you could give me details of her mother ….Adi Ciba.

I would love to ask you a question, I have been into genealogy for many years and traced my family from Europe to the United States, recently my family members and I did a DNA test that showed I had 5% Melanesian DNA and they contained Melanesian DNA as well.

I have no idea who was Melanesian or if there is a link to Kai Loma in particular but being from the East Coast US, with all my ancestors settling there….it is extremely rare.

I was wondering if anyone heard rumors, or knew if a Kailoma descendants migrating to the US.

    Thank you.

      K. Smith,
I’m not sure about the east coast but I know for sure in late 19th century white merchant ships were luring Pacific Islanders out of the Pacific on the promise of work, when the arrived in their respective countries they were forced into indentured servitude, my own great great grandfather wound up working in Nantucket for many years before finally making his way back to the Pacific with some missionaries. So yes it is entirely possible that your ancestors were Kailoma as, the Germans had been trading with the Fijians (and most likely enjoying the local women while ashore) since 1820’s. The most evident German influence on the creation of the Kailoma in the Fiji islands is Rotuma where the locals have lighter skin and frequently have Scandinavian features such as green eyes, blondish wavy hair, very pretty.

Isireli that is very true. My g grandfather ran his business from Rotuma in the 1880s and married a Rotuman. He came from Denmark. One of the Norwegian’s on his schooner also married a Rotuman and there were also several German traders there as well. Definitely got the Scandinavian genes there.

        Isireli,

Thank you for your response, my sister did tell me one of my relatives was a wealthy Sea Captain with the last name of Stevens in the early 1800’s from Massachusetts who did travel around the world.

I can see him being the only person to be connected to my Melanesian ancestry. Everyone else were poor farmers in the rural Mountains of Appalachia.

I do have a quite a bit of German ancestry but no information on their lives except many were farmers, I’m not aware of them traveling much apart from coming to America.

I have never found any information about these lost Melanesian ancestors and it would be a shame to lose them to history. The discriminatory ways of the past made many people hide who they were, I would really wish to know more about them.

    Kia ora,

A plea for information from Aotearoa, New Zealand.

I am looking for info on what I believe is the Mills line of which we are thought to descend. My grandmother, Mary Buffett nee Gordon (Scottish father, Kailoma mother – we think) was born in Fiji but migrated to Norfolk Island as a baby where her family settled before settling in New Zealand. We have strong ties to Norfolk Island as my grandfather Arthur Buffett was a direct descendent of the Tahitian women, and the men of the Bounty. I would like to investigate more about my grandmothers heritage as it is really our missing link.

We believe that our family may be from Bua, Vanua Levu but are unsure of particulars.

We were raised thinking my grandmothers family had/or worked on banana plantations but now know this may have in fact have been coconut plantations?

I am particularly interested in hearing any information about an Aunt who lived in a Catholic convent in Fiji, we are unsure of her role on the convent grounds and know little about her. Her name was Laura Gordon and she went by the name Lol or Lole.

I would be interested in any information that anyone might have, some cuzzies out there perhaps? My grandmother was an incredibly special and spiritual lady, however did not share much of her knowledge about her Fijian roots (I’m not sure how much she knew herself).

Looking forward to hearing if anyone out there can enlighten me and my sisters 🙂

      Hi Emily,

I am also trying to find out more about the Mills family. Your grandmother Mary Buffett was my Father, Tom Gordon’s older sister. My wife and I are planning to visit Grandma Gordon’s home village, Wainunu, Bua, on the Island of Vanua Levu in the near future.

I would love to hear from you,
      Cheers,
      Robert.

Hi, I am hoping someone may help in tracing my ancestors who lived in Fiji.

In Sep 1872, William Edward Mackie sailed from Sydney to Fiji on the Scotsman. I believe my great great grandmother Helen or Ellen Marion Blanche Mackay born Mackie, his sister, then possibly separated, widowed, or newly remarried, accompanied him on the voyage. At some time before 1876 she married Richard Leigh either before she left Sydney or in Fiji.

The Fiji Times records that in Feb 1874 Richard Leigh & William George Weston, whom Helen married in June 1876 in Loma Loma, were jurymen on the inquest in Levuka into the death of William Brewer, co-owner of Brewer & Joske’s Sugar Mill & Plantation.

According to an 1884 birth certificate Helen appears to have borne an unnamed son (deceased by 1884), possibly in Fiji to William Weston, then had two daughters to him in Queensland. His occupation was recorded as master mariner. It is possible he may have left Helen sometime after 1887.

A William Weston sailed on the Ovalau from Levuka to Auckland in 1892. In 1893 a William Weston, seaman, drowned in Sydney. According to my cousin Loloma, one of her grandchildren Helen operated a trading post in Fiji. Helen died in Brisbane in 1943 aged 97. Her brother possibly left Fiji for New Zealand in 1879.

Your help would be most appreciated, thanks Candy.

I am searching for any information on the Evans brothers that came to Fiji from Wales. I know one was John (Jack) Evans who was married to Rose Mary Hamilton. I am also seeking any info on the Hamilton family as well as the Manley family. Any info on any of these three families would be great.

Hello! My name is Hugo Schierling, borned in Buenos Aires, Argentina (1965 -). My father was Hugo Charly Schierling (1931 – 2009) born in Uruguay. My grandfather was Hugo Schierling (12/04/1883 – 1955), born in Hamburg, Germany, and as I know, he lived a couple of years in Fiji, where he had children.
I´ve read on this website that Leonard Charles Benjamin Schierling (03/03/1908 – 11/10/1998), was born in Suva, Fiji. He married Nora Adelaide Schierling (born Eastgate) and they had 4 children Mavis Tilly Anna Schierling, married with McCullum, and three more.
I don´t know if there is a relationship between Leonard Charles Benjamin Schierling and my grandfather Hugo Schierling.
    Thanks ! Regards!

Bula Ms Emily and Mr Robert,
My grandmother is a Mills from Waidranudranu in Wainunu, Bua.
The first Mills that settled in Wainunu was Henry Mills, he had only one son and the rest where girls. I believe your great grandmother is one of Henry Mills daughters.
I am actually drafting our family tree (Mills side) and according to my grandmother one of Henry’s daughters, Eteci/Edith married a Mr Gordon (from NZ).
According to my grandmother, Mr Gordon was friends with Arthur Mills (Henry Mills’ son) that’s when she met Eteci/Edith. (Edith/Eteci is Arthur’s younger sister). They (Mr Gordon and Eteci) had a daughter named Lora.
    Vinaka, hope this helps.
Send me a email if you want to know more. Would love to know more from your end too.

As an impressionable 10 year old or thereabouts growing up in the late 1960s or early 1970s in Vatukoula, I remember listening on Friday and Saturday nights to Horace Emberson (lead guitar), Silver (drums) and Joe Peters (bass guitar) in the Vatukoula Loloma Community Hall. They were a small tightly knit family rock band with a fresh, edgy and original sound that appealed to my growing youthful curiosity about rock music and the world at large. Now a retired civil service functionary at 65 years of age, I carry the echo of that sound, music and beat in my head. These days I have graduated to listening to Handel, Mozart, Bach, Litz. Beethoven, Schuman, Tchaikovsky and the occasional Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell, Crosby, Stills Nash & Young, et al, there is no mistaking where my early musical influence came from. Those kailomas knew how to make music in the 1960s.

Horace Emberson is on Facebook. He moved to Australia a few years back. I believe he still plays guitar. He was good friends with my brother Charlie and I remember them playing together almost as good as Jimi Hendrix. This is when the Emberson moved to Suva.

My Great grand father was John Alfred Jack Sinclair, born 4th July 1857 died November 30th 1905 in Levuka. He married Eliza Spitzenberg, who was half German, half Samoan. She was born in Apia. They lived in Levuka. After he died she returned back to Apia. They had quite a few children; Thomas, John aka Jack, Margaret, Jane, Robert, William, and Mass. I can’t remember the rest. My granddad was Captain William or Willy Sinclair. His son, Jack Sinclair, is my dad. Just wondering if any one knows or has more information on the Sinclair’s during their time in Levuka amd Suva. Sinclair wasn’t on the Kailoma list.
